Alabama Public Radio is a service of the University of Alabama. As National Public Radio and Public Radio International member stations, our signal proudly reaches close to 40% of the state, and a potential audience of almost 2 million. Alabama Public Radio is WUAL-FM 91.5 in West/West Central Alabama, Tuscaloosa/Birmingham; WQPR-FM 88.7 in Northwest Alabama, Muscle Shoals/Florence; and WAPR-FM 88.3 in South Central Alabama, in greater Selma/Montgomery. WUAL became the first public radio station to provide service to the Tuscaloosa area in 1981 when the FCC granted the University of Alabama its license. Our first broadcasting date was January 4th, the next year. A mainstay in the academic and artistic environment of Tuscaloosa, WUAL broadcasts in the greater Tuscaloosa area, including Birmingham. Five years later, in 1986, the FCC granted the University a license to broadcast in Northwest Alabama on WQPR. On November 20th, 1987 WQPR provided the first public radio service to the Muscle Shoals area including Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia. In a cooperative effort, the University of Alabama, Alabama State University and Troy State University, proudly began broadcasting on WAPR, in May of 1996, as a continued service of these learning institutions. In the Alabama Public Radio tradition, South Alabama and the greater Montgomery/Selma area now proudly enjoy public radio programming. Many of our listeners receive public radio in this region for the first time. The purpose of Alabama Public Radio is to participate in the mission of the University of Alabama: teaching, research, and community service. Programming for Alabama Public Radio is supported solely by the contributions of our listeners. Alabama Public Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, every day of the year. In addition to being an affiliate of National Public Radio and Public Radio International, Alabama Public Radio airs the most public radio and local news programming in Alabama. With the addition of a Montgomery bureau in the near future, our multi-award winning news department boasts regularly scheduled daily newscasts of state news as well as frequent news and feature contributions to NPR. An impressive number of Alabama Public Radio news alumni have advanced to national and international broadcasting achievements. Alabama Public Radio airs diverse music programming including classical, jazz, folk, bluegrass, blues, new age, ambient, cajun, zydeco, Latin, and World music. Alabama Public Radio broadcasts from studios in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
