Review of One Shoe In the Road: Struck Cyclists and Their Stories

In the show?s open, the narrator states that as both a driver and a survivor of a cycling accident, his objective is to bridge the gap between cyclists and drivers. ?One Shoe? dramatically presents the stories of several unidentified cyclists in chapters?the accident, the hospital experience, recovery, etc?a production style that is reminiscent of ?This American Life.? Music provides an effective bridge between segments and heightens the impact of some gruesome tales of cycling accidents?this is not something for the squeamish! The program does include some obscenities, which, the producers have cleverly altered for airplay. ?One Shoe? graphically examines a topic that is little discussed outside of the cycling community and is a program that could serve as good catalyst to a local discussion of bicycle safety and community planning around bike paths and cycling lanes.

Review of Crusts - (7) - Randy Barrett

The producer aptly describes the tone of this short feature on musician Randy Barrett as contemplative and earnest. The piece, which is part of an on-going series of portraits on individuals discussing their careers, mixes interview clips with Barrett with classical guitar, a curious choice since he's a bluegrass banjoist. Barrett sounds like an interesting musician with a story to tell but, unfortunately, because the piece lacks a narrative structure neither he nor the listener is served by this portrait--a nice effort that could be improved through more context and narration.

Review of Lies and Lying Liars

"Lies" is part of "Multiverse," an on-going series of modules on science and technology. Like many series of modules, there's about ninety seconds of content on the subject matter and thirty seconds for the standard open, outro and funding credits. The two hosts recite various facts on the topic and give a good sense of the key points on their subject. If you're looking for a short form module on science and technology for insertion into a magazine or news program, this may be a good option.

Review of War photography

Although the subject is topical, this particular piece was produced in April 2004 in response to images from Fallujah and the war in Iraq. Because of its reference to a particular event, the introduction is dated. The introduction aside, Haviv speaks of the power and importance of photography in areas of conflict. The interviewer does a good job of examining Haviv?s personal and journalistic response to his work.
