slow music for fast times

An uninterrupted hour of Ambient, Space, and Contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries.

Hearts of Space is one of the longest-running and most popular music series on public radio. Produced and hosted by STEPHEN HILL with Associate Producer STEVE DAVIS, it launched nationally in January 1983 after ten years as a Bay Area late night program on KPFA-FM in Berkeley. The show has run on well over 400 stations in 34 years of national distribution and is still building extraordinarily loyal, long-term audiences, who commonly use addiction metaphors to describe their love for the music.

The show anticipated the rise of electronic music, new age, and Minimalism as popular genres in the 1980s, but always went beyond them in scope and quality by bringing together contemplative, space-creating music and soundscapes from some 30 new and traditional genres:

| African/Sub-Saharan | Ambient/Downtempo | Artist Special | Celtic | Central Asian | Chinese | Cinematic/Soundtrack | Classic HOS Mix | Contemporary Instrumental | East Indian | Electronic Space | Ethno/Ambient | Guitar | Holiday | Japanese | Latin American | Mediterranean | Middle Eastern/North African | Miscellaneous/Eclectic | Native American | New Vocal | Orchestral/Chamber | Piano | Sacred/Choral | Scandinavian/Arctic | Southeast Asian/Indonesian | Space Jazz | Spanish/Moorish | Tibetan | World Fusion | Hide full description
