AG 23-17: Dream A Little Dream, 4/24/2023

From WFIU | Part of the Afterglow series | 59:00

We’re counting sheep with the Great American Songbook this week, as we explore standards all about dreaming, including “This Time The Dream’s On Me,” “You Stepped Out Of A Dream,” “Street Of Dreams” and many more dreamy tunes.

Put-your-dreams-away_small What is a dream? An expression of our deepest desires, as Shakespeare said “the very substance of the ambitious”? Or is it merely some evolutionary byproduct of some biological need for sleep, as Freud called it, “the guardian of sleep”? Scientists are still debating the origin and purpose of dreams to this day. But perhaps we can look to the American Songbook for one artistic interpretation of the dream. And that’s what I’ll be doing this hour. Ahead, we’ll hear jazz standards about dreaming, including “You Stepped Out Of A Dream,” “Deep In A Dream,” “This Time The Dream’s On Me,” and many more.

Healing The Earth: Debra Rienstra

From Lee Camp | Part of the No Small Endeavor series | 54:00

What does climate change have to do with living a good life? Debra Rienstra discusses why we are only able to flourish when we care for the earth, seeking healing and restoration rather than treating it as our “grocery store and sewer.”

Nse_cover_3000x3000_small

What on God’s green earth does climate change have to do with living a good life?

To answer such a question, says author and professor Debra Rienstra, we must first ask a more basic one: what is the good life? “We have assumed that it is affluence and upward mobility,” she says, “but that good life is not sustainable.” If a good life is one of purpose and healing, then it is precisely the Western ideal of success that is eating away our ability to live good lives. In this episode, we discuss her book Refugia Faith, in which she makes the argument that “the created world is not just our grocery store and sewer,” and that to live a good life, we must care for the planet on which the good life takes place.
