In 2055 New York City has been remade. Holobots - holographic projections - roam the streets, in many cases nearly indistinguishable from real human beings. The holobots are marketing tools owned by Kingore, CEO of Holobots, Inc., the megacorporation seeking to produce the most realistic holobots. The genius behind Kingore's efforts is programmer Freddie C, whose quest for holobot realism has created fame that threatens to eclipse that of his employer. But something has gone wrong in Freddie's quest. On the morning of June 7th, 2055, we find him wandering the streets of New York, stunned, alone, and confused. He only knows he must find Lucinda, the light of his life.

Intro and Outro

INTRO:

In this science fiction tale, we explore the inner psyche of a man in a future where holographic images can be programmed to look and act like real human beings.

Like most science fiction, our story presumes that some contemporary developments in technology will reach levels only imagined now. Our story envisions future developments in holograms, artificial intelligence, and repairing brain damage with stem cells. Also like many other science fiction tales, it alludes to forms of science - or even of quasi-scientific mysticism - that are outside of current knowledge. Star Wars famously invoked "the Force" as a unifying agent of all living things. Isaac Asimov used the "positronic brain" to explain how his robots attained such human-like characteristics. In this story, our hero refers to the "psionic field" emanating from living cells. This is, of course, fanciful science...for now. Yet it appeals to an idea that many people instinctively cherish: there is a living force, power, or energy that pervades and preserves our personal identity.

Ultimately, science fiction is not about technology, or even about subtle forces acting in the universe, but about our use of them -- how they create new hopes, new dangers, and new possibilities for our own mode of being.

As you follow our hero, Freddie C., through his day, remember that he begins in a state of confusion. As he wanders the streets of New York City in his quest for Lucinda, he drifts from memory to memory, just as he shifts from place to place in his search.

OUTRO:

Thus ends the story of one Freddie C., a man whose love, ambition, and knowledge succeeded too well.
