What's the Word? Celebrating Poetry

What's the Word? Contemporary Language Poetry

In the 1970s, poets in New York City and San Francisco were exploring new ways to write poetry. Two of these poets, Charles Bernstein and Bob Perelman, along with Toronto-based poet Steve McCaffrey, read poetry and talk about the emergence and diversity of contemporary language poetry.

What's the Word? Rhyme

As children, we learn to rhyme before we know what it is. We hear it in nursery rhymes, games, and songs. Our first attempts at writing poetry usually involve rhyme. On this program, we'll hear about rhyme in three languages. The poetry critic Helen Vendler explores William Butler Yeats's "Sailing to Byzantium"; Suzanne Stetkevych talks about the classical Arabic ode; and Laurence Porter discusses French poetry.

Well-suited to National Poetry Month in April.

Fifteen- and thirty-second promos available.
