In my management consulting practice I have found organizations often have similar challenges, such as changing a culture, engaging employees, managing talent, developing new leaders, creating new growth, and managing expenses, while at the same time exceeding customer expectations.

I prepared a series of questions that address these types of challenges and shared them with John Caparella. His experience, knowledge and intuition have led people to view him as a very practical, emotionally intelligent leader.
I am sure you will find John's answers to be brilliant and engaging, and the information discussed very meaningful and valuable.

Hispanic Heritage and Emotional Intelligence

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 28:13

In honoring Hispanic Heritage on my radio show I interviewed a Hispanic leader who I highly respect and who I have worked closely with, Rafael Pinzas. We talked about his work in leading others from countries all across Central and South America. Rafael shares a lot about what he has learned about the Emotion Roadmap and how he has applied it to his leadership.

Chuck_in_orlando_png_small In one example of what he has learned Rafael says: "Chuck I learned from you there are two ways to enter a room. One is to go through the door and the other is to use a hammer and and break down the brick wall. And if I use the hammer, then there are a lot of bricks to clean up once I am in the room."

Performance Evaluations are Better when We Use the Emotion Roadmap

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 54:01

Worried about an upcoming conversation about your performance? Are you a leader who has a number of performance evaluation discussions in the next few months? Over the years I have helped countless leaders improve how they handle conversations about performance.

Chuck_in_orlando_png3_small  If you want to have better, more effective discussions listen for tips on how to use emotional intelligence. In this radio show I incorporate the idea that performance discussions have three parts. These include a beginning where you set the tone, a middle where you discuss what is working well and what may need to change, and at the end when you end the discussion. How you want to feel at each step of the way is really important to consider. You can actually plan emotionally how you and the other person feel throughout the discussion. I tell you how in this radio show.

Caring for and about People Who Seem Different

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 51:29

Build bridges to those who seem different. Topics include black history month, the Patriots Super Bowl loss, and challenges with family and friend relationships.

Patriots_head_shot_octoer_2017_small I talk about the "other" and introduce the idea that we often focus on how others are different than us and identify with those most like us. How can we learn to see all the ways in which all of us are similar. We focus some on black history month, on the New England Patriots Super Bowl loss, and some callers share challenges with family and friends. All this is done by framing the conversation in ways that help each of us to be more emotionally intelligent, and more emotionally mature. As a fan of the Patriots I share a story about a family we have been friends with for over 30 years who adore the Philadelphia Eagles. This family has never seen the Eagles win a championship until this year. So even in our loss as Patriots fans, I celebrated the victory of my friends. There is also a conversation with a caller where I agree that a family member who hurts our children should not necessarily be forgiven. Tough lesson but real.

Emotion Revolution in the Workplace

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 54:21

Conversation with Andrew Faas about his work to change the way we all relate to one another. Andrew has an alliance with the Center for Emotional Intelligence at Yale University to create an Emotion Revolution in the Workplace. The interview has lessons learned about leadership, organization culture, and the role emotional intelligence can play in creating more positive workplaces and communities.

Chuck_wolfe_panel_speaking_at_nyc_small

Peter Drucker is reported to have said that culture will eat strategy for breakfast every time. Andrew Faas has discovered that safe, productive, inspiring workplaces arise as a result of trust, clarity of purpose for the organization and each person in it, and efficacy - the idea that we have the ability to produce a desired result. He and I also discuss the importance and role of each person's immediate supervisor at every level of organization. The key variable impacting people's experience in the workplace is the feelings they have about the person he or she reports to in the organization. Even in toxic workplace cultures individual leaders can make life tolerable to the people who report to them. Tune in to understand and learn more about the Emotion Revolution.

Concerns about legalizing marijuana? Use revenue to support social and emotional learning

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 52:25

Children who experience social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools are less likely to drink alcohol, take drugs, or smoke. On the plus side they are often better students, more welcoming of diversity, and are more active in caring for others. When we legalize marijuana for recreational use if we target the dollars to support we will actually see a decrease in drug consumption and an increase in self-esteem.

Lea and Doug struggle, Lea with Independence, Doug with Loneliness

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 54:51

In any relationship there is the idea that both parties share responsibility for the success. Sometimes people begin to think about the percent each person in the relationship is carrying. To guarantee the relationship works I teach Lea and Doug about the idea that when you want to guarantee a relationship works you take 100% responsibility and expect 0 % from the other person. This powerful concept transfers accountability for the relationship success totally to you. Listen and learn how it might help you as well. Look at the longer description to see who Lea and Doug are as they describe themselves.

Feeling_the_tension_small Lea 27 lives at home and struggles with emotional maturity and independence from her parents, especially her Dad. Listen and you decide.

Emotions Role in Successful Change 7 14 21

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 41:15

Organizational and individual change efforts often struggle to succeed. In this show I focus on a real case study involving the key role emotions play in a successful change effort I led in the hospitality and convention center business. The information shared will benefit any and all leaders who wish to engage in successful change.

Road_for_change_small Key factors leading to success include a clear and compelling vision of what the future will be when the change succeeds; a series of clear, concrete first steps; significant pressure to leave behind the status quo or current state of affairs; and focused attention on the role of emotions of those leading the change and those impacted by the change. My experience as a counselor and family therapist and as a leading expert in change management and emotional intelligence provide a unique background and understanding for how individual and organizations behave when they attempt to change.

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 35:37

A Council on Academic Freedom launched at Harvard March 2023 and has some similar goals to a panel I helped create with Yale President Peter Salovey and the group No Labels. Peter was interested in free speech on campus and No Labels promotes bipartisanship. Yale Alumni from Democratic and Republican administrations participated with a representative of No Labels. They provide excellent insights regarding root causes and innovative ideas for enhancing civil discourse. This excerpt of highlights was featured on my radio show and hopefully spurs others on to do related events.
