Ben contemplates the effect that art has had on him, as he views "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," one of Picasso's seminal works. "Les Demoiselles" (1907) depicts a group of Spanish prostitutes in a French brothel, which are depicted simply and with raw intensity. The work began to show Picasso's transition into Cubism and the progression of his artistic focus from "outer presence to inner shape, from color to structure, and from modified romanticism to a deepening formalism (Schwartz, Cubism, p. 15)." By using Iberian statuary and african art as the influences for his painting, Picasso created a highly unique and beautiful work, abstractly simple in its depiction, but rich in meaning and history.
